FLATWATER SHAKESPEARE YOUTH ENSEMBLE PRESENTS "THE TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA"
JUNE 21-23 AT THE SWAN AT WYUKA
A youthful playwright’s comedy about a young man’s folly deserves a youthful cast – and the Flatwater Shakespeare Youth Ensemble is here to supply it!
Many of Lincoln’s finest young actors present William Shakespeare’s “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” in the open air Swan Theatre at Wyuka, 3600 “O” Street, June 21-23, 7 p.m. Call 473-2897 for tickets: $10 general admission and $8 for students and seniors.
Proteus and Valentine are the best of friends until Proteus falls for the object of Valentine’s affections: the lady Silvia. Confused by different and conflicting ideas about love, Proteus forsakes his own beloved, Julia, and decides to betray his unsuspecting friend. He finds, however, that Silvia and Julia and Valentine have a lot to teach him about loyalty and love.
The company includes Danny Carraher as Proteus, Rue Mumgaard as Valentine, Emma Gruhl as Silvia, and Noemi Berkowitz as Julia. Joining them are Annie Albin, Kresse Alvey, Cierra Austin, Katie Frankforter, Prestyn Hartman, Hunter Maud, Chloe Nore, Will Voelker, and Harper Wilmoth.
The production is directed by Tom Crew and adapted by Stephen Buhler.
The Flatwater Youth program offers fully staged adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays. In 2006, versions of The Comedy of Errors and Romeo and Juliet were presented at the Swan, making use of the sets constructed for the main productions of each play; these shows were followed in 2007 with Love’s Labor’s Lost, in 2008 with The Taming of the Shrew, and in 2009 with Julius Caesar. All our shows reflect our commitment to increased gender balance in roles and casting and also to full engagement with Shakespeare’s language for young people. Flatwater’s educational programs have been generously supported by the Nebraska Humanities Council.
